Note the framing. That is advice about acquiring a reptile, addressed to a household making a decision. It is not an instruction to rehome an animal you already have. How the bacteria actually travel

Understanding the route explains why the hygiene rules are stricter than they look.

UKHSA states that most reptiles carry Salmonella in their intestines and shed bacteria in their droppings, that these bacteria then quickly spread over the vivarium, particularly in water baths, and onto the reptile's skin, and that any surface or object the reptile comes into contact with can become contaminated, including your hands.

It adds a point that matters in a shared house: if good hygiene measures are not followed, people who had no direct contact with reptiles can also become infected indirectly through the reptile handler or by contamination of the environment.

So this is not really about whether you personally hold the snake. It is about where the vivarium water goes, which sink the equipment is washed in, and whose hands touch what afterwards.

The frozen rodents are a separate hazard

This is the part of UKHSA's guidance that surprises most owners, and it is the biggest practical exposure in a lot of households.

UKHSA states that just as for handling raw human food, there is an inherent risk of Salmonella when handling raw, frozen or defrosted pet food such as mice, rats or chicks, because freezing does not kill Salmonella. Its instructions on this are specific.

  • Frozen pet food should not be allowed to defrost between purchase and return home, and should go into the freezer immediately on arrival.
  • Frozen reptile food should not come into contact with frozen human food or its packaging. Rodents should be securely double bagged, for example in a polythene bag inside a rigid airtight plastic box, and ideally kept in a dedicated compartment or freezer.
  • Always defrost naturally at room temperature on newspaper or paper towels, away from human food and preparation surfaces. Do not defrost in warm water or a microwave and do not use a hairdryer, because all of these increase the risk of contaminating your hands, other items and surfaces.
  • Do not refreeze defrosted feeder rodents, and do not leave them long after defrosting before feeding.
  • Minimise handling with your hands by using long tweezers or forceps, and gloves.
  • Dispose of the newspaper, towels and packaging carefully after use, out of reach of children and other pets, and remove uneaten rodents promptly.

Cleaning that actually works

UKHSA is unusually precise about disinfection and it is worth following exactly, because the common approach does not work.

Thoroughly disinfect any surfaces and equipment used, such as bowls, that may have come into contact with the frozen feed, after every use. Household bleach, or boiling of smaller items, is suitable for this. Disinfectant sprays are not sufficient. Do not use disinfectants on reptiles or other animals.

The same applies to feeding equipment such as long tweezers, tongs and bowls, which should be disinfected after every use and between feeds if you are feeding more than one animal, to avoid cross-contamination.

And the rule that covers everything else: always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water immediately after handling the frozen food, after feeding your reptile, after handling the reptile itself, and after cleaning the vivarium or any equipment such as soaking pools.

Where the reptile is allowed to be

UKHSA sets out household rules that are easy to slip on and are the ones that matter for anyone else living there.

Keep your reptile out of rooms where food is prepared and eaten, and limit the parts of the house where it is allowed to roam freely. Do not eat, drink or smoke while handling your reptile or its food and equipment. Always supervise children so they do not put the reptile, or objects it has been in contact with, near their mouths.

Feeding feeder rodents to cats and other pets may lead them to contract Salmonella and potentially pass it on to you, and UKHSA advises discussing this with a vet first.

Why this matters more in pregnancy

UKHSA notes that Salmonella infection can have serious consequences, particularly for babies, small children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, and that in rare cases the infection can be fatal. Salmonella infection in people usually causes a relatively short-term illness with diarrhoea, fever, vomiting and abdominal pain, but more severe illness requiring hospitalisation can occur.

The practical point in pregnancy is dehydration and fever rather than direct infection of the baby. Being unable to keep fluids down is a bigger problem when you are pregnant than when you are not, and a fever in pregnancy warrants contacting your midwife or GP rather than waiting it out.

Handing the job over

The straightforward answer for most households is that someone else takes on feeding and cleaning for the duration, which removes the two highest-exposure tasks entirely. That is easier than perfecting a hygiene routine and it is what most keepers do.

If that is not possible, the guidance above is followable by one person with gloves, tongs, a dedicated bleach bottle and a rule about which sink is used.
