Can babies drink cold formula?
Safe — No minimum feeding temperature. UK and Ireland: made with water at 70C or above, then cooled. Discard a started feed after 2 hours; a made-up feed after 24 hours in the fridge
Yes. Formula does not have to be warmed. Babies can take it at room temperature or straight from the fridge if they will accept it, and there is no health reason to heat a feed. The disagreement is not about the temperature at the mouth but about the water temperature used to make it.
The verdict
Yes. There is no health requirement anywhere that a bottle be warm. A baby who will drink formula at room temperature, or cool from the fridge, can have it that way, and nothing about their digestion, weight gain or comfort depends on the milk being heated.
Warming is a preference, mostly the baby's. Babies who have only ever had warm bottles often refuse cold ones, and babies started on room-temperature bottles usually carry on accepting them, which is worth knowing before you commit to a routine that requires a kettle at 3am.
Where the real disagreement is
The temperature at the baby's mouth is not controversial. The temperature of the water used to make the feed is, and this is the thing to get right.
In the UK and Ireland, every powdered feed is made with freshly boiled water that has cooled for no more than 30 minutes, so it is still at 70C or above when it meets the powder. That step is not about warmth for the baby. It is about killing bacteria in the powder, which is not a sterile product. The feed is then cooled under a running cold tap before it is given.
In the United States, the AAP allows powdered formula to be mixed with room temperature tap water immediately before feeding, and states that a bottle made this way needs no refrigeration or warming. Boiled water is required only for infants younger than 2 months, those born prematurely and those with a weakened immune system.
Both frameworks end up allowing a cool bottle. They get there differently, and a UK parent who copies the US shortcut has skipped the step their own guidance treats as essential.
How to give a cool feed the UK and Irish way
Make the feed by the standard method, water at 70C or above first, then powder. Cool it quickly by holding the capped bottle under cold running water, or standing it in a jug or bowl of cold water with the water level below the neck of the bottle.
Test on the inside of your wrist. The NHS description of the target is useful: it should feel warm or cool, but not hot.
If you have made feeds in advance and refrigerated them, they can be given straight from the fridge if your baby will take them, or warmed briefly. The HSE's limit on warming is a practical one: no more than 15 minutes in a bowl of warm water or a bottle warmer.
Never the microwave
Every authority says this and it is worth repeating because it is the one that causes actual injuries. Microwaves heat unevenly and create hot spots in the liquid that a wrist test on the outside of the bottle will not detect. The milk can scald a baby's mouth and throat even when the bottle feels fine.
Bottle warmers, a jug of warm water, or a running warm tap are the safe options.
The timing rules that actually matter
Once a feed has been started, the clock runs. The HSE says throw away any feed your baby has not used within 2 hours of starting the feed. The AAP says prepared formula must be discarded within 1 hour after feeding from the bottle. The NHS instruction is simply to throw away any unused formula or breast milk after you've finished bottle feeding.
A made-up feed that has not been touched can go in the back of the fridge, at 5C or below, and the HSE and AAP both cap that at 24 hours.
Room temperature is where bacteria multiply fastest. The HSE's reasoning is worth carrying: warm milk provides ideal conditions for bacteria to grow, especially at room temperature. A bottle left out on the side while a baby dozes is the risk this is aimed at, not a cool feed given promptly.
Does cold formula cause wind or upset tummies?
There is no evidence that it does. Babies who are windy on cold bottles are generally windy on warm ones. Wind in the first months is normal, it peaks around six weeks, and it is not caused by milk temperature.
What can change is acceptance. A baby who has always had warm milk may refuse a cold bottle and take less, and that is a real problem in the short term, though it is a feeding problem rather than a safety one. If you want the flexibility of cold feeds, introducing them early and consistently is easier than converting a four-month-old.
Where guidance differs
On whether a bottle must be warm: nowhere. All four authorities allow room temperature or cooler.
On how the feed is made: the UK and Ireland require 70C water for every powdered feed; the US requires boiled water only for babies under 2 months, preterm babies, and immunocompromised babies, and otherwise permits room temperature tap water.
On what to do with a started bottle: the AAP gives 1 hour after feeding begins, the HSE gives 2 hours from the start of the feed, and the NHS says discard whatever is left.
Out and about
The safest option away from home is a carton of ready-to-feed formula, which is sterile until opened and needs nothing added. The alternative is to carry measured powder and a flask of water that is still hot enough to be above 70C when you use it, then cool the made-up bottle. Carrying a pre-made bottle in a cool bag is a fallback rather than a first choice, and it comes with the same 24-hour and 2-hour limits.
The NHS method ends with cooling, not warming: after adding the powder to water at 70C or above, it says to cool the formula so it's not too hot to drink by holding the bottle, with the lid on, under cold running water, and to test the temperature on the inside of your wrist, where it should feel warm or cool, but not hot. There is no instruction anywhere in NHS guidance that a feed must be warm. It warns never to warm up formula in a microwave, as it may heat the feed unevenly and burn your baby's mouth, and says to throw away any unused formula after a feed.

The HSE's preference is a fresh feed given as soon as it has cooled to the right temperature, because warm milk provides ideal conditions for bacteria to grow, especially at room temperature. Where a refrigerated feed is warmed, it says to place it in a bowl of warm water below the neck of the bottle, or use a bottle warmer, and not to warm it for more than 15 minutes, then check the temperature on the inside of your wrist where it should be lukewarm, not hot. It says never use a microwave to warm feeds because they heat unevenly and may cause hot spots.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is explicit that a warm bottle is optional. Its guidance says a bottle can be prepared by adding powdered formula and room temperature water from the tap just before feeding, and that bottles made this way from powdered formula can be ready for feeding, with no additional refrigeration or warming needed. Where formula is prepared in advance it must be cooled to body temperature before feeding, and the temperature tested by shaking a few drops on the inside of the wrist. Prepared formula must be discarded within 1 hour after feeding from the bottle, and unfed prepared formula stored in the refrigerator for no more than 24 hours.
